Behind the Flame: The Soy Wax We Use at WICK WORX
Share
A candle’s fragrance might be the first thing you fall in love with, but its story begins before you ever light the wick.
Today, I’m taking you behind the scenes at WICK WORX to share one of the materials at the heart of my candle-making: 464 soy wax.
If you’ve never thought about the wax in your candle, you’re not alone. Fragrance and a beautiful vessel tend to catch our attention first. But in my Christchurch studio, the wax is where each candle begins.
What is 464 soy wax?
464 is the name of the soy wax grade I use to make WICK WORX candles. Soy wax is made from soybean oil, and “464” identifies the particular formulation, rather than a fragrance or candle size.
It’s one part of the finished candle, alongside the wick, fragrance and vessel. Each has a role to play in creating the candle you bring home.
From wax to something personal
For me, candle-making is about bringing those elements together, with fragrance at the heart of it all.
I love how a scent can become part of the way a room feels. Something fresh to welcome the day, something comforting for a quiet evening, or a familiar favourite that makes a space feel like yours.
Behind that experience is the hands-on work of making. Before there’s a finished candle, there are materials on the studio bench, wax to melt and fragrance waiting to become part of the next creation.
A little closer to the maker
WICK WORX is a one-person business and a labour of love. Sharing these small details is a way to bring you a little closer to the making, and to the person behind your candle.
So, next time you light your WICK WORX candle, you’ll know a little more about where its story started.
With warmth,
Sheryl
